Funny things happen when you Google yourself. Like this …

That earthly paradise …

Wonderous tales of lore speak of the glorious Shangri-La to the West. The Great Marvel of the Temple of Outdoorness Stuff. Crowds flock every Saturday to worship upon commodious commodities that spill from the shelves. All is bounteous at The Temple. On arrival in the West I shall make a pilgrimage to The Temple clutching my disciple redemption voucher. And lo I will lay the shelves bare. Oh the rapture, Oh the joy!

A good place to start ….

Our very nice friends Kendall and Sharon in Tacoma have said it is OK to stay with them when I arrive to start my trip. I am most grateful to them and very relieved that I have a base for a few days before I begin. Kendall and his friends do lots of cycling and are going to give me tips for my route. Also, they know how to build bikes so maybe they can remind me what all those screws are for on the derailleurs (if every there was a reason to buy a bike with a Rohloff it is a woman cycling across America with a screwdriver and a dodgy transmission).

I haven’t visited Tacoma (yet) so this lovely photo of St Giles cathedral (Edinburgh) at dawn will have to do.

Eek! A cycle trip

I looked at the PedalPlenty blog the other day and it said 190 days til I cycle across North America. Eeek! I thought I better get my 700c’s on! I have been so busy pussy footing around doing nothing of any consequence that I have been neglecting my planning. So all in a rush I

• sent polite email to friends in Tacoma to ask if I could stay with them for a few days
• speculated on international currency fluctuations and decided that I should buy a bike when I get to America (it will cost 12 pence)
• decided upon a Cannondale Touring 1 but now I am fraught coz I think it’s over geared
• decided that pre-trip training was unnecessary. I will tolerate the usual three days of hell and then I’ll be fine. Those mountains are nothing to be. Mount Rainer … pah … I will dance up that hillock (or perhaps just collapse in a heap after 50 metres). See me I have cycled in Ride the Rockies, Pyrenees and on the famous Danube river uphill route.
